Building Sustainable Organizations for Affordable Housing and Community Development Impact: Lessons and Recommendations from the Field

Affordable housing programs are feeling pinched between the foreclosure crisis and the recession as the foreclosure issue increases the need for affordable housing but the economic meltdown is resulting in fewer funds available for nonprofit housing agencies. This paper looks at building and sustaining organizations through difficult economic times by examining 10 nonprofit housing agencies that were stressed and/or forced to close down during the past few years. The report examines systemic risks, service areas and key funders and stakeholders. It also makes recommendations for community development organizations based on the challenges and lessons learned by organizations that were struggling. Learn more
