Getting a Grocery Store in Your Community
This report examines the correlation between healthy communities and access to healthy food, plus highlights one specific community that worked to bring a grocery story to fruition. The project involves a partnership between Pagedale, Missouri and Beyond Housing, a nonprofit housing agency. The project started when Beyond Housing began working with the city to revitalize homes. During this process, the overall health of the neighborhood was evaluated and a community action plan was formed with input from local residents. One of the noted needs was a grocery store. The steps to bringing in the grocery store are outlined here as well as lessons learned and plans for moving forward. This project can be used as a model for other “food deserts.”
