New Initiative Strives to Build Vibrant Communities
A new initiative announced in this video by President Obama’s domestic policy advisor, Melody Barnes, will help communities spur economic growth and deliver federal resources in an effective, efficient manner. Called Strong Cities, Strong Communities, this pilot program is focused on building vibrant communities. It was founded on feedback from mayors across the country who provided insight on what types of partnerships would be most useful. The program will help local governments face challenges and will support their work already underway.
The Strong Cities, Strong Communities pilot offers federal support for development growth in local communities. Since local communities know best where investments need to be made, the program strives to coordinate federal and local government efforts for better transit, health clinics, training for workers, education for children, job creation and other community needs. Fourteen federal agencies are involved in the initiative which will provide technical assistance to six cities involved in SC2. In addition, the program is offering an Economic Planning Challenge Grant to cities that create a comprehensive strategy.
This program will serve as a national network for local governments to access national resources and expertise. It will help to leverage assets, invest in communities, support growth in cities and improve relationships between federal and local governments.
