The Remarkable Story of Oakland’s Fruitvale Transit Village

The multi-use and multilayered Fruitvale Transit Village — a walkable development centered around the metro (BART) station in Oakland, CA — is an excellent example of sustainable community development. The village, formerly a parking lot, comprises 257,000 square feet of building space, a retail-lined pedestrian street, and a plaza between the BART station and retail section of the neighborhood. The development includes 220 units of mixed-income housing, 68 HUD-assisted units, 114,000 square feet of community service and office space (including a clinic, library and senior center), 45,000 square feet of retail space (shops and restaurants), and a 150-car parking garage. It is convenient, condensed, well-planned and attractive. Read more.
