Community Regeneration, Sustainability and Innovation Act

Direct legislation that would support cities with decreasing populations was introduced in Congress in February. Called the Community Regeneration, Sustainability and Innovation Act, this legislation would create a new HUD program that targets cities with large-scale vacancy and abandonment due to population loss and unemployment. Program funds would be used to demolish abandoned properties as well as reuse existing buildings, develop green space and city planning, and provide technical assistance grants to cities.
