Federal Grants Fix Properties in Hard-Hit Louisville Neighborhoods

Federally funded projects in Louisville, KY, are focused on redeveloping distressed and/or vacant properties. Here, NSP funds are developing affordable homes for low- to moderate-income families and renovating buildings for public housing. Specific neighborhoods are targeted, which are more at risk for foreclosure or abandonment, in order to have a strategic effect on the areas most in need.

Various ideas are explored in this article regarding how NSP funds should be spent: on targeted programs such as on homelessness, or on broader areas instead of specific neighborhoods. Plans related to program proceeds are shared in this article and opinions from participating families are included. One suggestion involves a partnership between nonprofit housing developers and for-profit companies to find neighborhood solutions. Although the impact of different strategies is debatable, this program has spurred a community conversation about local needs, which is a positive outcome.
